About The Blue Feather Project

The Blue Feather Project: A Community Watch With Purpose

Red Feather Lakes has always drawn a certain kind of person — those seeking solitude, independence, and a life outside the rat race. Nestled in one of the most remote corners of Larimer County, its rugged beauty and patchy cell service have made it a refuge not just for outdoor lovers, but also for those looking to live far from the reach of law enforcement and oversight. That’s part of its charm — and also part of its vulnerability.

With limited patrols, long response times, and homes scattered across miles of back roads, Red Feather Lakes has quietly become a place where crime can go unnoticed — or unreported. That’s where the Blue Feather Project comes in.

The Blue Feather Project is a three-year effort to reduce crime in RFL through greater community engagement and collaboration with local authorities. It’s not about confrontation or finger-pointing — it’s about noticing, documenting, and working together to keep our area safe without compromising the spirit of independence that defines it.

Each year, the project targets a different public safety issue:

  • Year 1 (2024): Impaired Driving
Our first focus was on the rising risk of drunk and drugged driving on our steep, unlit roads — especially during weekends and holidays. In August last year we hosted a dinner for members with Colorado’s founder of DUID Victim Voices along with local law enforcement.  Increased reporting and advocacy from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) for increased patrols by Colorado State Patrol have resulted in stepped-up enforcement.

  • Year 2 (2025): Drug Activity
This year centers on the spread of meth and fentanyl — drugs that are increasingly linked to property crime, violence, and neighborhood instability. We’re focused on clear, factual reporting of concerns to disrupt the network without vilifying individuals.

  • Year 3 (2026): Burglary and Property Crimes
The final year will target home and cabin burglaries, which have surged in areas with part-time residents and poor surveillance. The goal is to help locals recognize signs of casing, secure their properties, and coordinate responses in real time.

At its heart, the Blue Feather Project is about reclaiming Red Feather’s peace and privacy without turning a blind eye to danger. The feather is a quiet symbol — not of force, but of vigilance. Of neighbors looking out for one another in a place where that still matters.
